UK-based Mott MacDonald has announced construction works for the 497 MW Fécamp offshore wind farm in France have begun.

Mott MacDonald acts as the technical advisor on the project on behalf of prospective lenders. It has completed a due diligence review for the wind farm, identifying technical risks and working with the developer to mitigate them.

In addition to reviewing the technical aspects of project design, development, construction and operation, the UK-based consultancy reviewed commercials, environment, permitting and health and safety. It will support the project during the construction and operational phases of the project.

Mott MacDonald project manager Will Lamond said: “This project is a great achievement for France and a continuation of the development of the French supply chain following the successful completion of the St Nazaire project in 2019.

“We added value from lessons learned on over 65 global offshore wind projects and were able to advise on how the project compares to current best industry practice in Europe.”

“Our extensive experience with offshore wind projects allowed us to provide efficient and effective support and advice to the consortium during the pre-financial close period.”

Fécamp offshore wind farm is owned by Western Power Distribution (WPD), an electricity distribution network operator along with Éolien Maritime France (EMF), which is a consortium of EDF Renouvelables France and Enbridge.

The wind farm is located in the eastern part of La Manche (the English Channel), off the coast of Haute-Normandie. Mott Macdonald said this is the third French offshore wind farm to achieve financing.

The Fécamp project will feature 71 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines and is expected to generate enough clean energy for nearly 770,000 people annually.

The construction company added that the first offshore works are slated to commence in early 2022, with completion expected at the end of 2023.
