US-based power company Dominion Energy Virginia has announced plans to build solar and energy storage projects in Virginia for the benefit of its customers.

In its second annual clean energy filing with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC), the company proposed to build 11 utility-scale solar projects and two small-scale distributed solar projects.

Dominion Energy Virginia also intends to develop a combined solar and storage project, as well as a standalone energy storage project.

All the projects will be owned and operated by the company.

If approved, the distributed solar projects and standalone energy storage projects are expected to be completed by next year. The remaining projects are planned for completion in 2023.

The proposal also includes power purchase agreements (PPAs) from 32 solar and energy storage projects operated by third-party providers, which were selected through a competitive solicitation process.

Dominion Energy Virginia president Ed Baine said: “Every day, the clean energy economy is becoming more of a reality in Virginia.

“This is the largest expansion of solar and energy storage in Virginia history and a major leap forward in delivering clean energy to our customers.

“As we expand renewables across Virginia, we remain laser-focused on keeping our service affordable and reliable.”

Dominion Energy Virginia said that the solar and energy storage projects’ construction could create 4,200 clean energy jobs and generate an economic benefit of $880m for the state.

The proposed projects will also help in achieving the goals of the Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA).

Apart from SCC approval, the projects would also require local and state permits to before construction works could begin.
