US-based power company Dominion Energy has selected Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) as the preferred turbine supplier for its 2.64GW offshore wind project in Virginia.

Located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, the offshore wind project will be built on a 112,800-acre area and generate carbon-free electricity that will be sufficient to power 650,000 Virginia homes at rated wind speed.

Dominion Energy generation construction vice-president Mark Mitchell said: “Siemens Gamesa is a global leader in offshore wind technology and has proven to be a great partner in our CVOW project.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship as we bring clean, renewable energy to our customers and support Governor Ralph Northam’s commitment to have Virginia lead the way in offshore wind.”

According to the agreement, SGRE will supply wind turbines from its Offshore Direct Drive platform. The installation is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

The final quantity of turbines that need to be supplied will be confirmed during a later phase of the early development period.

The latest agreement is expected to support the submission of the project’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP) to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) later this year.

Ocean survey work, which is a mandatory requirement of BOEM, is set to begin later this year and will be incorporated into the COP.

In addition, both companies will work together to assess the development opportunities in the offshore wind supply chain and reduce the project cost.

Last June, Dominion Energy started construction of a pilot offshore wind power project as an initial step in designing a larger commercial offshore wind development.
