Duke Energy Florida (DEF) has announced the sites for its three solar power facilities in Florida, with a total capacity of 195MW.

It plans to build 45MW Lake Placid Solar Power Plant on 380 acres in Highlands County, Florida. This facility will feature around 180,000 tracking solar panels and is expected to become operational by the end of this year.

It will be owned, operated and maintained by DEF, which bought the development rights to the project from EDF Renewables. DEF is responsible for all remaining development activities.

The 74.9MW Trenton Solar Power Plant will be built on 580 acres in Gilchrist County and will comprise 280,000 tracking solar panels.

The plant will generate enough power for more than 23,000 average homes at peak production. It is expected to become operational in December 2019.

“With the inclusion of these facilities, DEF will have nine solar power plants in operation by the end of the first quarter of 2020.”

The 74.5MW DeBary Solar Power Plant in Volusia County will have 300,000 fixed-tilt solar panels, enough to generate power to cater to more than 20,000 homes. It will become operational in March 2020.

Duke Energy Florida state president Catherine Stempien said: “These three solar power plants are expected to eliminate nearly 800 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions in Florida each year upon commercial operation. That’s the equivalent of taking about 70,000 passenger cars off the road each year.

“These projects represent our commitment to the environment and more fuel diversity in the state as we strategically pace the expansion of renewable generation for our Florida customers’ benefit.”

DEF is investing an estimated $1bn to build or purchase a total of 700MW of solar power facilities through 2022.

With the inclusion of these facilities, DEF will have nine solar power plants in operation by the end of the first quarter of 2020.
