Dumat Al Jandal, a 400MW utility-scale wind power project in Saudi Arabia, has been connected to the country’s grid and begun generating electricity.

Developed by a consortium led by EDF Renewables and Masdar, Dumat Al Jandal is said to be the largest wind farm in the Middle East region and the first in Saudi Arabia.

The project features 99 wind turbines with a power output of 4.2MW each. The wind turbine erection works are nearing their completion phase.

The turbines have been supplied by Danish turbine company Vestas, which is also the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project.

Construction works for the project began in September 2019.

Once fully operational, the wind facility will generate enough green energy to power up to 70,000 Saudi households while offsetting 988,000t of carbon emissions a year.

The project is expected to create more than 600 local jobs during the construction phase and support Saudi Arabia in its climate change mitigation goals.

The power generated by the facility will also strengthen the country’s energy network during its peak summer consumption period.

Under a 20-year power purchase agreement, the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm will supply clean energy to Saudi Power Procurement Company.

Masdar Saudi Arabia country representative Osama Al Othman said: “Masdar is proud to be leveraging its experience in renewable energy to deliver the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s first wind farm in collaboration with our partners.

“The successful connection of the project to the electricity transmission grid marks an important milestone for this landmark project in [Saudi Arabia] and we look forward to [the] project’s completion in the near future.”

In April, Masdar signed an implementation agreement with the Government of Uzbekistan to increase the capacity of its Zarafshan wind farm from 500MW to 1.5GW.

Last year, the company entered bilateral agreements with the government to build and operate the wind project.
