US-based water, hygiene, energy technologies and services provider Ecolab has agreed to provide support for Clearway Energy Group’s US renewable energy projects, including a 419MW wind farm, Mesquite Star, located in Fisher County, Texas.

Under a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), Ecolab will support the construction of 100MW of new renewable electricity capacity within the Mesquite Star wind farm.

In 2015, Ecolab signed 5MW of community solar subscriptions with Clearway in Minnesota.

Ecolab corporate sustainability vice-president Emilio Tenuta said: “We continually work to improve the sustainability footprint of our customers’ and our own operations, and the renewable electricity generated from the Mesquite Star wind farm will help us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020 versus a 2015 baseline.”

The clean energy generated under Ecolab’s 100MW VPPA is expected to fulfil 100% of the company’s annual domestic energy needs.

“These US renewable energy projects will help utility and corporate purchasers achieve renewable energy goals.”

Clearway’s Mesquite Star is part of more than 60 utility-scale wind and solar projects being developed by the company in the US.

These US renewable energy projects will help utility and corporate purchasers achieve renewable energy goals.

Currently, Clearway owns 4.1GW renewable energy projects, which also includes assets held by its Clearway Energy.

The 4.1GW is comprised of 2.8GW of wind, 1.1GW of utility solar and more than 300MW of distributed and community solar.

Clearway Energy Group CEO Craig Cornelius said: “We are proud to have Ecolab as a partner on the Mesquite Star wind farm.

“Our work together is a testament to the power and potential of the growing corporate VPPA market, and one of many ways that Clearway is consistently building out projects in our 9.5GW pipeline of utility solar and wind projects.”
