The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Orkney, Scotland and Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC) have partnered to develop large-scale tidal energy site off the Isle of Wight, England.

Located 2.5km south of the Isle of Wight, PTEC’s 30MW tidal energy demonstration facility site has the potential to expand its capacity up to 300MW.

In the future, the site will be eligible to bid in UK Contracts for Difference (CfD) allocation rounds, which will enable the nation’s tidal energy technologies to deliver predictable low-carbon energy.

The two organisations entered the partnership after positive market signals from the UK Government to create an infrastructure ready for commercial-scale tidal energy rollout.

Additionally, the partnership builds on the £41m Interreg Channel funded TIGER project, which focuses on tidal energy developments in five sites in France and the UK.

The TIGER project is led by the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) and EMEC is serving as the key site development partner.

Currently, EMEC is working on-site development and optimisation activities and will build on PTEC’s earlier works for obtaining to get the site consented in 2016.

Additionally, PTEC noted that it is exploring opportunities for offshore green hydrogen generation.

Making the PTEC site deployment-ready is expected to significantly boost the UK tidal energy sector.

“Working alongside the Marine Energy Council, EMEC and PTEC submitted evidence into the marine energy consultation and have now come together to get the PTEC site ready and accommodate commercial tidal energy array deployments.

“This is a great opportunity for EMEC to share the consenting and site development knowledge developed in Orkney while supporting the development of tidal energy and local job creation in the Isle of Wight and Solent.”
