The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has completed cold hydrostatic testing (CHT) at Unit 3 of the 4-unit Barakah nuclear plant in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

CHT completion is considered to be an essential aspect in the development of Unit 3 of the Barakah nuclear plant.

It is also considered to be a significant milestone in the expansion of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme.

ENEC CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi said: “The successful completion of the CHT ensures that Unit 3’s coolant systems and high-pressure components meet the highest international standards of quality and safety, as per the regulations of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation.

“Step by step we are moving closer to achieving our goal of supplying the UAE with clean and reliable electricity to power its future growth and development while maintaining our track record of safety and quality.”

Before CHT was undertaken, the nuclear steam supply systems of the Unit 3 were flushed with demineralized water, besides installation of Reactor Pressure Vessel Head and Reactor Coolant Pump Seals.

"The successful completion of the CHT ensures that Unit 3’s coolant systems and high-pressure components meet the highest international standards of quality and safety."

During the CHT process, the welds, joints, pipes and components of the reactor coolant system and related high-pressure systems were verified.

Inspection teams from Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), along with ENEC and Nawah Energy Company commissioning oversight and quality surveillance personnel undertook detailed inspections to identify any leakage in component and piping system.

In July 2017, ENEC announced the completion of CHT at Unit 2  of the Barakah nuclear energy plant, and in the same month of 2016, the company concluded the CHT works on Unit 1.

Earlier this year, ENEC and KEPCO carried out major construction works at Unit 3 including concrete pouring, installation of the turbine generator, and the internal components of the reactor pressure vessel before commencement of testing and commissioning.

Upon completion of the project, all four units will deliver clean electricity to the UAE grid, and also will help in annually eliminating more than 21 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
