Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA) has commenced construction on the 140MW Oyster Bay wind farm in South Africa. Located in the Kouga Local Municipality in Eastern Cape Province, the Oyster Bay wind farm will be built with an investment of approximately €180m.

Featuring 41 wind turbines, Oyster Bay will be capable of generating around 568GWh of power per year and eliminate around 590,000t of carbon dioxide annually. The windfarm is expected to be fully operational in the second quarter of 2021.

Additionally, Oyster Bay has a 20-year power supply agreement in place with the South African energy utility Eskom and Enel

EGP RSA noted that advanced tools and methods will be used for the construction of the project. This includes monitor and remotely support activities at the site, plant commissioning, conduct quality controls on site and smart track wind turbine components.

The company has also committed to create jobs in the community surrounding Oyster Bay.

Enel Green Power head Antonio Cammisecra said: “With the start of construction of the fourth wind project in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, we are continuing to contribute to the socio-economic development of the area through our zero-emission energy and initiatives to create shared value.

“These initiatives include the innovative model implemented at the Oyster Bay construction site, as well as the sustainability activities, focused on scientific and technical education in the area around the project.

“Looking ahead, we will continue to harness South Africa’s abundance of renewable resources, creating a virtuous circle of sustainable energy generation, education and development.”
