Enel Green Power North America (EGPNA) has started operations of a 199MW expansion of the Cimarron Bend wind farm in Clark County, Kansas, US.

The initiation of the new capacity has increased the facility’s total capacity to 599MW, making it the largest renewable plant owned by the Enel Group currently in operation worldwide.

EGPNA’s 236.5MW White Cloud wind farm, which is located in Nodaway County, Missouri, has also begun operations.

The company said that the two new facilities have brought a total of 865MW of new renewable capacity online in the US and Canada this year.

“In a challenging year across all sectors, our teams have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the achievement of our business goals while continuing to prioritise health and safety.

“These milestones further prove our track record in the development, construction and operation of high-quality generation assets, enabling the accomplishment of sustainability targets by us and our renewable energy off-takers.”

EGPNA has invested $380m in the construction of White Cloud and more than $281m for the expansion of the Cimarron Bend wind facility.

With its overall 599MW facility, the wind farm is expected to generate more than 2.7TWh of clean energy annually while offsetting nearly 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions.

Under power purchase agreements (PPA) with Evergy, EGPNA has agreed to sell 150MW of renewable energy generated by Cimarron Bend wind farm, while 30MW of clean energy will be sold to Missouri Joint Municipal Electric Utility Commission.

The White Cloud wind facility is expected to generate around 950GWh annually while avoiding more than 621,000t of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Green energy generated by this facility will be sold to Associated Electric Cooperative under a PPA, and the Springfield-based electric cooperative will purchase the entire energy output.
