Norwegian energy company Equinor has awarded contracts worth Nkr3.3bn ($359m) on behalf of Gullfaks and Snorre partners for the development of Hywind Tampen windfarm.

The companies that secured the contracts from Equinor include Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE), JDR Cable System, Kværner and Subsea 7.

Equinor Technology, Projects and Drilling executive vice-president Anders Opedal said: “The signing of five major contracts is a key milestone in realising the Hywind Tampen pioneer project.

“Won in international competition, the contracts prove that the oil and gas industry is also competitive for renewables projects. The awarded contracts will generate considerable spin-offs in Norway.”

Norwegian engineering and construction services company Kværner will be responsible for the design and construction of the substructures. The substructures will be built at Kværner’s yard located in Stord as well as at a facility located in Dommersnes in the Vindafjord municipality in Norway.

SGRE will be responsible for the fabrication of the wind turbines, which will be produced at various locations across Europe. They will be moved to Wergeland Base in Gulen in western Norway for assembly.

Additionally, SGRE’s Norwegian service organisation will provide maintenance service to the wind turbines under a five-year contract.

Electrical cables for the Hywind Tampen will be delivered by JDR Cable System, while Subsea 7 Norway will install the electrical cables and connect them to the Snorre and Gullfaks platforms.

Hywind Tampen will then be operated and maintained by Equinor. Once operational in 2022, it will be the first to power Snorre and Gullfaks offshore oil platforms.

As a result of this, the carbon emissions from the oil platforms will be reduced by more than 200,000 tonnes annually.

Earlier this month, Equinor announced that it will invest nearly $550m (Nkr5bn) on the development of the Hywind Tampen floating offshore windfarm.
