The final MHI Vestas turbine has been successfully installed at the Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore Wind Farm in Germany ahead of schedule.

The 56 V164-8.0MW turbines installed at the offshore wind farm will have the capacity to generate 450MW of clean energy.

With a hub height of 105m and a tip height of 187m, the turbines have 80m-long blades and a total swept area of 21,124m².

"We are proud to contribute to the clean energy transition, with 56 MHI Vestas turbines powering more than 460,000 German households."

The turbines were installed by Fred. Olsen Windcarrier (Fred. Olsen) using its jack-up installation vessel Bold Tern.

Fred. Olsen related company Global Wind Service was also involved in the installation, mechanical and electrical completion, and pre-assembly works.

Located 57 km off the north-west coast of Germany, Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore Wind Farm is jointly owned by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP – 50%) and Orsted (formerly DONG Energy – 50%), with the latter as the developer.

Installation contractor MHI Vestas chief operations officer Flemming Ougaard said: “With the last V164-8.0 MW turbine now installed at Borkum Riffgrund 2, we look forward to the commissioning phase and to the future of offshore wind energy in Germany.

“In partnership with Ørsted, we are proud to contribute to the clean energy transition, with 56 MHI Vestas turbines powering more than 460,000 German households.”

The project secured €832m ($1.04bn) in debt financing from a group of institutional investors and is expected to be commissioned in the first half of 2019.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 will be Ørsted’s fourth offshore wind farm in German waters, located next to Borkum Riffgrund 1.
