GE has secured a contract to supply gas power generation equipment for West Africa Energy’s combined-cycle power project in Senegal.
Under the contract, GE will supply two 9E.03 gas turbines as well as one STF-A200 steam turbine, three A39 generators, and two heat recovery steam generators, and also additional balance-of-plant equipment.
The power plant in Cap des Biches, Dakar, will use these equipment will generate 300MW. Turkish engineering, procurement, and construction company Calik Enerji is building the plant.
GE Sub-Saharan Africa Gas Power CEO Elisee Sezan said: “Over the last decade, GE has been building on a proven track record of delivering and commissioning power projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, and we are delighted to continue this trend by providing our gas power technology to support the expected renewables growth in the country.
“Cap des Biches Power Plant in Senegal represents another opportunity to use gas-fired generators as an ideal complement to variable renewable resources because they can change power levels quickly, turn down to low levels when demand is lower, and start rapidly.”

By GlobalDataThe power plant will commence its first phase of operations from next year. Once operational, Cap des Biches will be the biggest power plant in the country.
The plant will generate nearly 25% of the electricity consumed in Senegal, powering the equivalent of approximately 500,000 Senegalese homes.
It will also contribute toward the Senegalese government’s objective of increasing its generation capacity, with greater utilisation of natural gas and renewables.
West African Energy CEO Samuel Sarr said: “We are pleased to collaborate with GE to deliver reliable and efficient gas turbines to Senegal, aligned with the country’s strategy on gas. This will develop the energy sector and be critical for the development of strategic sectors of the economy, while actively driving localisation initiatives.”
