US-based Gemma Power Systems (GPS) has completed the construction of a 785MW combined-cycle electric generating facility in Oxford, Connecticut.

Also known as Towantic Energy Centre, the facility is managed by Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) and operated by NAES Corporation.

"The CPV Towantic Energy Centre is a 2×1 combined-cycle facility primarily fuelled by clean natural gas."

GPS chief executive officer William F Griffin said: “I want to recognise and thank all of the talented women and men of Gemma Power Systems for their outstanding contributions to this project as we delivered another great project experience to all of our stakeholders

“We congratulate CPV on the addition of another highly efficient, clean energy facility to their fleet. We are pleased for the opportunity to continue our relationship with the company and its people.”

Featuring two General Electric 7HA.01 combustion turbine generators, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine generator, the CPV Towantic Energy Centre is a 2×1 combined-cycle facility primarily fuelled by clean natural gas.

During the peak construction period, GPS is said to have employed 700 skilled craft employees and will now be hiring 22 permanent employees.

The Towantic project is reported to be the second major facility completed by Gemma for CPV, the first being an 800MW facility that was built in Palm Springs, California in 2013.

CPV’s Towantic is part of 3GW project under construction by GPS across five US states.
