Norwegian energy companies Scatec and Equinor have announced that their Guañizuil IIA solar power plant in Argentina has started commercial operations.
Located in San Juan Province, the 117MW plant is equally owned and operated by the two companies.
The plant is expected to generate 305GWh of renewable energy a year, enough to power 80,000 households in the region.
Equinor Renewables executive vice-president Pål Eitrheim said: “Solar will be among the fastest-growing global energy sources [over] the next decades and an important element in the global energy transition.
“Guañizuil IIA is the second solar project we are jointly developing with Scatec in South America. We see this partnership as a great way to build our renewables business.”

By GlobalDataThe Guañizuil IIA plant is part of the Argentinian government’s RenovAR renewable energy tender programme, which has so far led to more than 2.4GW of new renewable energy capacity.
Scatec said that its investment in San Juan Province will provide a ‘positive change’ to the region and support Argentina’s shift towards green energy.
Scatec CEO Raymond Carlsen said: “We are a frontrunner in developing renewable energy in high-growth markets and our success in Argentina yet again confirms our strong track record of effective project development, expanding our footprint in the region.
“[Guañizuil IIA] is also our second successful partnership project with Equinor, which we are very pleased with.”
Scatec is currently developing projects with more than 1.4GW of capacity in the Latin-American region and intends to be a long-term partner in the region.
Last month, the company signed an agreement with ACME Group to co-develop a 900MW solar power plant in Rajasthan, India.
The project is expected to generate 1,600GWh of clean energy a year once operational. Construction works on the project are expected to begin this year and be completed next year.
