Chinese company LONGi Solar has commissioned a 5GW monocrystalline module factory as part of its strategy to increase its high-efficiency monocrystalline module capacity to meet global demand.

The factory has been set up with a total investment of about $328m. Construction began in May 2018 and was completed later that year. It produced its first module in January 2019.

The first 2.5GW phase of the project is currently in operation. The second phase is in the commissioning stage and will soon commence production.

High-efficiency passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) module technology boosts the power output whilst slashing BOS cost. With the addition of bifacial technology, the advantages of monocrystalline PERC extend to the rear side of the module, increasing power generation capacity.

“Besides manufacturing, the factory will also facilitate the transformation of technological and technical achievements to the mass production of new products.”

Currently, LONGi’s monocrystalline cell and module capacities are all PERC, producing both monofacial and bifacial products.

LONGi Solar president Li Wenxue said: “In 2019, our company identified a gap between fast-growing global orders and our high-efficiency cell and module capacities. LONGi Chuzhou factory will greatly narrow this gap. Besides manufacturing, the factory will also facilitate the transformation of technological and technical achievements to the mass production of new products.”

LONGi plans to proceed with its 45GW monocrystalline silicon ingot and wafer capacity expansion plans for 2020, and that it will continue to invest in the research and development of solar monocrystalline technology.

Last month LONGi Solar secured a contract to supply PERC modules for the 224MW ‘bifacial+tracker’ power generation project being built in Mitchell County, Georgia, US.
