Turbine manufacturer MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has handed over the commercial operations of the 450MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore windfarm in Germany to Ørsted.

The handover follows the successful installation of the 56th and final V164-8.3MW turbine by MHI Vestas at the windfarm. With a capacity of 8MW each, the wind turbines have been installed on suction bucket jacket foundations. The installation works were completed ahead of schedule in September 2018.

Jointly owned by Global Infrastructure Partners (50%) and Orsted, Borkum Riffgrund 2 is located 54km off the coast of Lower Saxony in the North Sea, Germany.

MHI Vestas chief operations officer Flemming Ougaard said: “The collaboration with Ørsted and other installation partners on Borkum Riffgrund 2 was outstanding. The project is a noteworthy contribution to the German clean energy transition.”

Ørsted Germany managing director Volker Malmen said: “Offshore wind energy is a reliable cornerstone for a successful energy transition. With MHI Vestas’ 8.3MW turbines for Borkum Riffgrund 2, we set a new milestone for offshore wind in Germany, by pioneering this technology in German waters.”

Borkum Riffgrund 2 project has the capacity to power more than 460,000 homes in the region with clean energy.
