MHI Vestas Offshore Wind has secured a turbine supply contract for the 139MW Akita Noshiro Offshore Wind Farm Project in Japan.

The contract has been awarded by Akita Offshore Wind (AOW), which is a Marubeni Corporation-led special purpose company.

The offshore wind farm project includes the construction of two facilities at Akita and Noshiro’s ports, in the country’s northern Akita prefecture.

MHI Vestas will supply a total of 33 V117-4.2 MW turbines.

Additionally, the contract includes a maximum 20-year service and maintenance agreement.

MHI Vestas CSO Henrik Jensen said: “We are pleased to secure the firm order to support AOW in its development of the Akita Noshiro Offshore Wind Farm Project.

The Akita offshore wind farm is a 55MW project that will feature 13 turbines, generating enough clean energy to power 48,950 homes annually.

On the other hand, the Noshiro offshore wind farm is an 84MW project to be equipped with 20 turbines and can power 75,308 homes in the region annually.

Wind turbines at both the sites will be installed with fixed-bottom foundations and the installation works are expected to begin in 2022.

Once completed, the electricity generated by the two wind farms will be fed through both the Akita and Noshiro ports.

Akita Offshore Wind Corporation president and CEO Keiji Okagaki said: “MHI Vestas’ supply record and the service and maintenance it will provide is highly valued by us.

“It has also supported our project finance arrangement for the first commercial base offshore wind project in Japan.”

Last month, MHI Vestas finalised contracts with investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) for the Changfang and Xidao offshore wind farms in Taiwan.
