Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has started to ship coal gasification furnace components for the 540MW Nakoso integrated coal gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) plant in Japan.

In order to generate power using an IGCC system, coal is gasified in a gasification furnace and power is generated with the help of a high-efficiency combined cycle system integrating gas and steam turbines.

The Nakoso IGCC Power plant is currently being constructed by Nakoso IGCC Power in Iwaki, Fukushima, and is expected to become operational by 2020.

The coal-fired power plant is expected to drive the redevelopment of industrial infrastructure in Fukushima Prefecture, as it continues to recover from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

“The project will also allow MHPS to promote the adoption of IGCC as a technology, which contributes to environmental conservation by advancing low-carbon energy.”

Nakoso IGCC Power was established with capital from five partners, namely Mitsubishi Corporation Power, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, and Joban Joint Power.

The shipment includes a pressure container. The gasification unit and auxiliary equipment will be shipped when ready, and are produced at MHPS’ new coal gasification furnace plant at Nagasaki Works.

Manufacturing at the furnace plant started last June.

To develop gasification units, the production system used welding and other technologies nurtured through the manufacture of boilers for conventional coal-fired power generation systems, automated welding machines and ICT systems.

The project will also allow MHPS to promote the adoption of IGCC as a technology, which contributes to environmental conservation by advancing low-carbon energy.

IGCC is a system that delivers between 10% and 15% higher power generation efficiency while helping to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
