E-commerce giant Amazon has revealed plans to install solar panels on 50 fulfilment facilities worldwide as part of its new initiative to generate clean energy.

The company plans to initially deploy solar systems on the rooftops of more than 15 fulfilment and sortation centres in the US this year. These projects are expected to generate up to 41MW of power at facilities in California, New Jersey, Maryland, Nevada, and Delaware. By 2020, Amazon plans to deploy such systems on 50 centres globally.

Amazon's worldwide operations senior vice-president Dave Clark said: “As our fulfilment network continues to expand, we want to help generate more renewable energy at both existing and new facilities around the world in partnership with community and business leaders.

“We are putting our scale and inventive culture to work on sustainability; this is good for the environment, our business and our customers. By diversifying our energy portfolio, we can keep business costs low and pass along further savings to customers.”

"We want to help generate more renewable energy at both existing and new facilities around the world."

Depending on various factors, such as project specifics and the time of year, the solar installations are expected to generate around 80% of each fulfilment facility’s annual energy needs.

The company’s recent renewable energy projects include its largest windfarm in Texas, US. A network of wind and solarfarms in Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia are also delivering energy onto the electric grid to power Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centres.
