Danish manufacturer Siemens Wind Power has deployed the upgraded version of its 8MW offshore direct drive turbine at the national test centre in Østerild, Denmark.

The SWT-8.0-154 offshore wind turbine features a 154m rotor. It has been mounted on a steel tower at a hub height of 120m. The prototype will be used for both mechanical and electrical testing and the company expects to receive the final type certificate next year.

Siemens Wind Power's offshore chief executive officer (CEO) Michael Hannibal said: “The installation of the SWT-8.0-154 prototype in Østerild is an important milestone in the success story of our offshore direct drive wind turbines.

“The evolution based on our platform strategy demonstrates that innovation to lower the cost of wind energy can work without compromising the proven reliability of a technically mature product.”

"Innovation to lower the cost of wind energy can work without compromising the proven reliability of a technically mature product."

Once the prototype is fully commissioned, Siemens will carry out the final development phase for the turbine, which  facilitates up to 10% more annual energy production (AEP) under offshore wind conditions than compared to the existing 7MW model.

Following the upgrade, the turbines will feature a rated power increase of more than 14%, from 7MW to 8MW. This will be achieved through the modernisation of only a few components, including a new cooling concept and control system.
