United Arab Emirates (UAE) Vice-President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has inaugurated the 200MW second phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai.

Built with an investment of AED1.2bn ($320m), the 200MW facility is being developed by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in collaboration with a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and Spanish company TSK. While ACWA Power operates as the main developer, TSK serves as the primary contractor for the project.

The Al Maktoum solarpower facility is the first and largest solar-energy project in the region being built on the independent power producer (IPP) model.

DEWA's managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said: “The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is one of the major projects that DEWA implements to achieve this promising strategy.

"It will eventually save over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year."

“It is the largest single-site solar park in the world, based on the IPP model, with a planned capacity of 1,000MW by 2020 and 5,000MW by 2030, with a total investment of AED50bn ($13.6bn).

The second phase of the project features 2.3 million photovoltaic (PV) solar panels installed over an area of 4.5km². They will be able to generate enough renewable energy to supply 50,000 homes in Dubai. In addition, the second phase of the project will be able to reduce carbon emissions by 214,000t every year.
