Ocean Winds, a joint venture of EDP Renewables (EDPR) and Engie, has announced the inauguration of the SeaMade offshore wind farm at the Ostend Hippodrome in Belgium.

The 487MW wind farm was inaugurated in the presence of Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

Developed by a consortium of Otary, Ocean Winds and Eneco, SeaMade is the second project built by the companies.

The wind farm is equipped with 58 wind turbines, which have the capacity to generate 1.8TWh of clean energy a year.

It will generate enough renewable energy to power 500,000 Belgian households while displacing more than 700,000t of carbon emissions a year.

SeaMade has been operational since the end of last year and will help Belgium achieve its renewable energy development targets.

SeaMade NV, a joint venture between the three companies, is also involved in the development of the Mermaid and Seastar offshore wind facilities.

The Mermaid offshore wind farm is the furthest zone in the North Sea, which is located around 50km from the Ostend coastline.

Clean energy is supplied to Elia’s offshore transmission grid through export cables in the seabed before being brought ashore.

SeaMade deputy CEO and Ocean Winds country manager Wouter Vandekerkhove said: “SeaMade, the largest offshore wind farm in Belgium, has been created thanks to the collaboration and expertise of various partners.

“We are pleased that, as part of the project team, we have contributed to the development, realisation and now the operation of this important wind farm in our North Sea.

“Ocean Winds wants to play a pioneering role in the energy transition in Belgium, in which offshore wind energy plays a very important role. Our ambition is to have 1000MW at sea by 2030, also in consortia such as this one.”
