Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian has been awarded a €140m contract for the 900MW DolWin5 offshore grid connection in Germany.

Awarded by the Dutch-German grid operator TenneT, the contract will enable the connection of multiple offshore wind farms to the German grid through DolWin5.

Prysmian will be responsible for the supply, installation and commissioning of a high voltage direct current (HVDC) 320kV XLPE-insulated submarine and land power cable connection.

It will also be responsible for the associated fibre optic cable system, comprising a land route of 30km and a subsea route of 100km.

Prysmian Group Projects executive vice-president Hakan Ozmen said: “The Dolwin5 project continues our valued long relationship with the major TSO TenneT and demonstrates our ability to provide tailor-made submarine cable solutions for challenging projects, providing the offshore infrastructure needed to support the growth of clean energy in Northern Europe.”

Located approximately 100km offshore in the German North Sea, the offshore converter platform DolWin epsilon will be connected to the mainland Emden/Ost converter station.

The turnkey connections will allow the generated renewable energy to transmit into the German grid. The manufacturing of submarine and land cables will be performed at Prysmian’s centres of technological and manufacturing excellence located in Pikkala, Finland and Gron, France.

Activities such as offshore installation will be carried out by the company’s Cable Enterprise cable-laying vessel for deepwater installation, and Ulisse vessel for shallow water activities.

The project is scheduled for completion by the middle of 2024.

ABB Power Grids received a contract from Aibel/Keppel FELS consortium to provide HVDC technology for the DolWin5 offshore wind connection project in May 2019.
