French electricity transmission system operator Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE) has awarded a contract worth more than €150m to Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian Group.

As per the terms of the contract, Prysmian will be responsible for developing two submarine and land export power cable systems.

These systems will link the French mainland power grid and a wind farm located between the islands of Yeu and Noirmoutier, off France’s northern coast.

Les Eoliennes en Mer d’Ile d’Yeu et Noirmoutier is developing the wind farm.

The company was selected by the French Government for nearly a 500MW production.

Prysmian Group projects business unit executive vice-president Hakan Ozmen said: “We are proud to be contributing to the development of infrastructures of such great strategic importance.

“This contract not only consolidates our relationship with RTE, but also confirms Prysmian’s worldwide leadership in addressing the increasing need for upgraded power grids to support the energy transition.”

The project will consist of installing a 27km submarine cable and an underground cable route of around 30km, which will have the capacity to transmit 500MW of green and renewable energy.

Prysmian will be responsible for deploying all needed capabilities and resources to enable the energy transition.

It will design, install and commission two HVAC 225kV three-core extruded export submarine cables that will reach the landfall area at La Barre-de-Monts beach.

Additionally, Prysmian will be responsible for the supply and integration of two HVAC 225kV extruded land cables circuits to establish a connection from the landfall area to the substation in Soullans.

The submarine cables will be manufactured at Prysmian’s centres in Finland and Italy, while the land cables will be produced in France.

Cable Enterprise will carry out the cable installation works.

Completion of the project is scheduled for 2023, subject to receiving the notice to proceed, expected by March 2020.

Once complete, RTE will design, build, maintain and operate the two 225kV links, including submarine and land to connect the offshore wind farm to the grid.
