Scatec and partners conclude 390MW Benban solar project in Egypt

Scatec Solar and its partners have completed the 390MW Benban project in Egypt by connecting the last of the six 65MW solar power plants to the power grid.

Scatec Solar and its partners have completed the 390MW Benban project in Egypt by connecting the last of the six 65MW solar power plants to the power grid. Located near Aswan in Upper Egypt, the project is part of the 1.8GW Benban solar park.

Scatec Solar CEO Raymond Carlsen said: “We have been a pioneer in Egypt since 2013 and been supporting the country’s efforts to increase generation capacity and increase the share of renewables in its energy mix.

“I’m very proud that we have completed our largest project ever. Constructing a total of six solar plants in just over 16 months is a major achievement for everyone involved.”

Scatec Solar along with its partners KLP Norfund and Africa 50 signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Government of Egypt in April 2017 to supply clean electricity generated by the six solar plants for a period of 25 years.

The Benban project is equipped with bi-facial solar modules. It captures sunlight from both sides of the panel to increase the clean energy generation.

Scatec noted that the project can generate 870GWh of clean energy annually, which is sufficient to power more than 420,000 households in Egypt while offsetting about 350,000t of carbon emissions every year.

Scatec is based in Norway but has projects all over the world. In May 2019 it signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Vietnamese company MT Energy to finance, build and operate large-scale solar projects in Vietnam.

The collaboration will cover three projects with a total capacity of 485MW that are located in Binh Phuoc, Quang Tri, and Nghe An provinces.
