Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has contracted wind turbine installation and service company Global Wind Service (GWS) for assembling 102 towers at the East Anglia One Offshore Wind Farm in the UK.

For this project, GWS will assemble towers at the Norfolk port of Great Yarmouth, before they are shipped out and installed offshore as part of the windfarm construction.

GWS chief commercial officer Michael Høj Olsen said: “Global Wind Service is very pleased to be part of this world-leading project together with our strong partner through ten years, Siemens Gamesa.

“We have been present in the UK for over nine years now, so this is a great way for us to underline our strong and continuous commitment to the country’s offshore wind market.

“A long-term project like East Anglia ONE is supporting GWS’ strategy to continue our growth globally and in the UK where it will also create more local jobs, which is great for the UK wind industry.”

“It will supply green energy to around 600,000 British households once it becomes operational in 2020.”

The turbine installation company is planning to begin pre-assembly work of the SWT-7.0-154 turbines at the site from next month and is expected to continue for a year.

Located in the Southern North Sea, around 43km off the Suffolk coast, East Anglia One will have an installed power capacity of 714MW. It will supply green energy to around 600,000 British households once it becomes operational in 2020.

Built with an investment of nearly €3bn, East Anglia One is one of the largest offshore windpower plants in the world. It is also the first windfarm to use 66kV cables on a commercial scale.

For the 66kV high voltage scope, GWS will draw on the specialised HV-technicians from its joint venture (JV) Delpro Wind.

In 2014, GWS and Delpro formed joint venture Delpro Wind.

Last October, Danish company Ørsted selected SGRE as the preferred supplier for the first 900MW Greater Changhua offshore Taiwanese windfarms.
