Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has won an order for the 640MW Yunlin offshore wind power plant in Taiwan.

Awarded by wpd offshore, the firm order follows after the Spanish company was selected as the preferred supplier in May 2018. SGRE will be responsible for the supply of 80 SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines and provide maintenance service for the turbines for a period of 15 years.

Yunlin offshore wind power plant is located approximately six kilometres from shore in the Taiwan Strait. Construction works at the site are expected to begin later this year and installation of turbines is planned to start in 2020.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Offshore Business Unit CEO Andreas Nauen said: “We are extremely satisfied that the preferred supplier agreement we reached with wpd offshore one year ago has materialised into a firm order.

“It is furthermore encouraging to be able to introduce the SG 8.0-167 DD in APAC with an order of this volume.

“There is an increasing number of such sizeable opportunities in the region, and we are looking forward to contributing further to the growth of offshore wind in this part of the world.”

The wind farm will feature localised towers in 2021 in order to meet the official localisation requirements on turbine components. The tower will be provided through the partnership between CS Wind and Chin Fong Machine Industrial.

“We are looking forward to contributing further to the growth of offshore wind in this part of the world.”

With a capacity of 8.0MW, the SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbine will use the 81.4m-long SGRE B81 blade with a swept area of 21,900 m2.

SGRE Offshore APAC region general manager Niels Steenberg said: “We are very proud that all the preparation work we did together with wpd and our suppliers unfolds into this important milestone.

“As the first large scale project in Taiwan, Yunlin will be setting up the scene for other later developments, and we will be needing continued support from local authorities and our partners to take on the challenges ahead.”

SGRE was awarded two supply contracts for offshore wind projects in Taiwan in October 2018.
