Global technology company Siemens has been contracted by the Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) to upgrade the Vindhyachal high voltage direct current (HVDC) link in the country.

Located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Vindhyachal is a 500MW HVDC back-to-back system and is the oldest link in the country.

A HVDC back-to-back link is used to connect two independent neighbouring transmission networks with incompatible electrical frequencies or different operating philosophies.

Vindhyachal commenced operations in 1989 and has connected two 400kV alternating current networks of the Northern and Western regions.

Siemens will be responsible for the installation of new thyristor valves, converter cooling system, HVDC control and protection system, direct current measuring devices and surge arrestors.

The thyristor valves and the HVDC control and protection system will be delivered from Siemens’ Indian facility located in Goa.

Siemens will extend the life of the link with the installation of new HVDC components and the upgrade is expected to be completed in 2021. It will be the first HVDC modernisation project in India and also the refurbishment project of a third-party system.
