Siemens has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bayat Power and the Government of Afghanistan to provide a SGT-A45 mobile gas turbine for Bayat Power 1.

To be situated in Sheberghan, Bayat Power 1 will be able to generate 52MW of energy.

The facility represents the first of a three-phase project, which is expected to generate more than 200MW of electricity upon completion.

The total output of the entire project is expected to be enough to meet the needs of more than 700,000 homes and businesses in Afghanistan.

It will be developed under a $250m independent power producer (IPP) investment programme and is anticipated to create various jobs in the fields of agribusiness, mining, and manufacturing.

“This first Phase will help kick-start Afghanistan’s journey towards energy independence.”

The project was announced last year with the signing of an MOU between Bayat Power and the Government of Afghanistan.

Bayat Power chairman Dr Ehsanollah Bayat said: “This first Phase will help kick-start Afghanistan’s journey towards energy independence, help restore our domestic gas-to-power industry and develop our nation’s economy.”

The Siemens SGT-A45 aeroderivative gas turbine will be used to power Bayat Power 1. It is capable of generating up to 44MW of energy each. This low-weight turbine can be installed rapidly in less than two weeks.

The SGT-A45 gas turbine is designed to run on gas or liquid fuel and it can be restarted at any time to restore power quickly after shutdown.
