Wind power generator Iberdrola and oil giant Total have teamed up to bid for the Thor offshore wind farm in Denmark.

The Danish Energy Agency has pre-qualified the 50/50 partnership to submit a bid for the offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea. The agency will conclude bidding in 2021.

With a capacity between 800MW-1GW, Thor will become one of the largest offshore windfarm facilities in the world upon completion. Thor will connect to the grid between 2025 and 2027.

Total Denmark country chair Martin Rune Pedersen said: “Total has a strong ambition to reach net zero by 2050 together with society and to play a major role in the energy transition in Europe.

“Our participation in the Thor tender is in line with this ambition as it underpins our desire to support the energy transition in Denmark, where we build on more than half a century of Danish offshore operational experience being a reliable energy partner to Denmark.”

In another development, Total has signed an agreement with 174 Power Global to form a solar and storage development joint venture. The equally-owned company will work on 12 utility-scale solar and energy storage projects of 1.6GW cumulative capacity in the US.

The projects will come from 174 Power Global’s development pipeline. The first project started production in 2020, with the remainder coming on stream between 2022 and 2024.

The projects span Texas, Nevada, Oregon, Wyoming and Virginia and are expected create new jobs in engineering, construction and plant operations.
