Total has teamed up with energy companies Elicio and Ørsted to form an industrial consortium and submit a joint bid for France’s offshore windfarm Dunkirk, which has a generation capacity of up to 600MW.

Dunkirk is part of France’s third round of tenders for the development of offshore wind that was announced by the national government.

Total Gas, Renewables and Power president Philippe Sauquet said: “Total’s participation in this offshore wind bid is in line with our strategy to develop low-carbon electricity business in Europe.

“Our recognised offshore oil and gas know-how combined with Ørsted market-leading expertise across the offshore wind energy value chain, as well as that of Elicio, an experienced developer qualified from the beginning of the bid, provide a solid foundation for the success of a safe and competitive project.”

The move is reported to be part of Total’s strategy to enter offshore wind business. So far, Total has been focussing on solar for its renewable energy business with the $1.3bn acquisition of SunPower, as well as a stake in Total Eren, a solar and wind energy producer.

Ørsted Offshore CEO Martin Neubert said: “Offshore wind can contribute significantly to France’s renewable energy targets.

In 2017, Total entered an agreement to purchase an indirect interest of 23% in EREN Renewable Energy for €237.5m.

This deal also offers Total an option to acquire EREN RE after a period of five years.
