Vestas has announced plans to scale down the production capacity of its V136 blades in Denmark and Germany to meet the manufacturing requirements of its changing product portfolio. This includes the release of the EnVentus platform and 4MW platform variants.

As part of this move, the company intends to reduce its workforce by approximately 600 employees working in two facilities located in Lauchhammer, Germany and Lem, Denmark.

Vestas executive vice-president and chief operating officer Jean-Marc Lechêne said: “Today’s very competitive industry and the fast-moving energy transition means we must introduce new products and solutions where and when the market requires them.

“Our continued competitiveness in this environment means we must adjust our global manufacturing footprint to ensure we proactively manage our cost base and invest in new solutions to capture future growth.

“We’re pleased that our new EnVentus and 4MW platform solutions are very well-received by our customers all over the world, but the resulting manufacturing changes mean we must, unfortunately, let go of good, hardworking colleagues.”

As part of the new initiative, the production of V136 blades will be halted at the Denmark facility, while production will continue at German facility but on a limited scale.

The company noted that its German facility will continue the production of V117 blades and upgrade the V117 blade moulds to ensure continued production.

Vestas has installed more than 14 GW of installed turbines in Germany, of which 11GW is under service. The company will have more than 2,300 employees after the intended workforce reduction.

Additionally, its research and development Centre in Aarhus and several test sites in Denmark, blade facilities in Lem, will continue to serve as the hub for blade innovation.

They will produce all blade prototypes and test blades for the entire Vestas product portfolio.
