Wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has secured a 534MW order from Brazilian firm Casa dos Ventos for the second stage of its Rio do Vento complex.

Located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil, the Rio do Vento complex currently has a 504MW first phase under construction. The project will begin operations in 2023.

Casa dos Ventos new business director Lucas Araripe said: “We are honoured to be able to extend our partnership with Vestas, making us the largest customer of the manufacturer in Latin America and reaffirming our commitment to the development of renewable sources in Brazil.

“We are convinced that the equipment technology will enable us to extract the region’s wind resource in an optimised way, serving our customers with clean, low-cost energy.”

Vestas said that it has developed a customised solution for the project by including V150-4.2 MW wind turbines with 4.3MW and 4.5MW power optimised modes to maximise the site’s production.

Under the contract, Vestas will supply, install and commission the wind turbines. It has also signed a 20-year Active Output Management 5000 service agreement.

Once completed, the combined facility will generate more than 1GW, one of the largest outputs in Latin America.

It will be the third deal between the two companies within less than two years, covering approximately 1.2GW of wind turbines.

Vestas Mediterranean president Javier Rodriguez said: “The scale of this project shows the potential of clean energy in Brazil and it marks a big step forward in the country’s energy transition towards a more sustainable future.”
