Voith has successfully upgraded small hydroelectric power station Mucomir in Scotland.

The upgraded facility is said to be more cost-effective and capable of meeting stringent environmental standards.

Under the deal, Voith was responsible for the development, installation and commissioning of the new turbine unit.

The company also integrated a new control system, a circuit breaker and a hydraulic unit, in addition to refurbishing the existing generator.

Voith Hydro Germany project manager Christian Merkl said: “The modernisation work was done during a shutdown, and because of the tight schedule, the fabrication and installation of the components were a major challenge.

“Voith was responsible for the development, installation and commissioning of the new turbine unit.”

“However, thanks to our experience and our close cooperation with plant operator SSE, we were able to complete the project no less than three weeks ahead of schedule.”

The upgrade features a remote control system that ensures safe and efficient unmanned operation and efficient fault analysis.

In addition, a new turbine blade design helps reduce adverse effects on fish, making it easier for them to swim through.

SSE programmes manager Peter Diver said: “The modernisation of the Mucomir hydropower plant ensures the commercial viability of the facility while taking account of ecological factors and using the most effective technological solution.”

Operational since 1962, the Mucomir small hydroelectric power station is part of the Great Glen Hydro Group and one among approximately 70 SSE hydropower projects across Scotland.
