Finnish firm Wärtsilä has secured an engineering and equipment (EEQ) contract to supply additional capacity for a power plant owned and operated by the national electricity technology company Kahraba.

The plant is located in Borg El Arab, an industrial city 45km south-west of Alexandria, Egypt. Kahraba is a private electricity service provider and part of the Egypt Kuwait Holdings (EKH) Group.

Kahraba deputy technical general manager Ahmed Nassr-Eldin Khaled said: “The local industries impose increasing demand on the power capacity.

“The Wärtsilä engines will help alleviate this situation and will enable us to deliver a reliable electricity supply to our customers, thus supporting industrial growth in the area. To extend the power plant with proven Wärtsilä design was a natural choice.”

Under the contract, Wärtsilä will supply two 34SG engines running on natural gas fuel and have a combined output of 19MW, as well as enhance the plants capacity.

The plant currently runs on three Wärtsilä 34SG engines, and the addition of two new engines would support the area’s growing industrial base.

Wärtsilä Energy Business regional director Magnus Miemois said: “Our smart power generation technology will provide added flexibility, as well as the capacity to the local grid here.

“Furthermore, the low noise specification for the radiators, plus the fact that the engines will operate on domestic natural gas, will enhance the plant’s environmental footprint.”

Wärtsilä plans to deliver the new engines in January 2020. The extended power facility is expected to commence its operations by the end of next year.
