Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has secured engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for two power plants in Latin America.

Under the EPC contracts, worth more than €190m, Wärtsilä will deliver 11 of its 50SG gas engines to each plant, and the two plants will have the capacity to generate more than 400MW electricity, once they become operational by the end of 2021.

The company has stated that its gas engine power plants have been designed to run on natural gas, LPG, synthetic fuels and various bio-gas fuels.

Wärtsilä Americas energy vice-president Sushil Purohit said: “The EPC and O&M package highlights Wärtsilä’s capabilities as a one-stop-shop supplier, which creates a highly competitive comprehensive solution for the customer.

“The high efficiency of the Wärtsilä engines with their quick power ramp-ups provide the flexibility and reliability needed in today’s energy market, which is trending increasingly towards renewable energy.”

The electricity generated by the two power plants will be supplied to the national grid in a flexible baseload mode.

Additionally, the Finnish company has agreed to operate and maintain both plants under a ten-year operation and maintenance service agreement (O&M).

The O&M agreements will be effective after the power plants commence operations, and Wärtsilä will recognise the orders intake after commissioning.

Earlier this month, Wärtsilä secured a contract to support a power plant located at the Mansourah & Massarah gold project mine in Saudi Arabia.

The contract was awarded by Indian company Larsen & Toubro and will see Wärtsilä provide engineering, equipment and technical advisory for the 44MW plant. Larsen & Toubro has been appointed as the main contractor for the project.
