Finnish power equipment manufacturer Wärtsilä has secured a contract from China’s Hubei Electric Power Survey & Design Institute to deliver a 100MW power plant.

The Chinese firm will deploy the plant in Bangladesh’s Gazipur Industrial Zone to address power shortage issues in the region.

Hubei Electric Power Survey & Design Institute procurement department deputy director Meng Hui said: “We very much appreciate Wärtsilä’s fast response enabling this much-needed baseload power plant to be installed as fast as possible.

“By providing a reliable supply of electricity to this industrial area, the economic growth of the region will be accelerated.”

As per the contract, Wärtsilä will be delivering six Wärtsilä 50 engines by July this year.

The engines will run on heavy fuel oil (HFO) and the plant is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year.

Over the past 12 months, the Finnish firm is reported to have received orders for nine power plants that will be installed in various regions across Bangladesh.
