Scottish engineering firm Wood has secured a new contract to support the Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear power station in the UK.

Under the multi-million dollar contract, the company will provide engineering and technical services to improve the project delivery and commercial performance, as well as technical supply chain delivery.

Effectively immediately, the Hinkley Technical Support Alliance (HTSA) agreement will have a performance period of five years with an option to extend it for a further five years.

Wood Specialist Technical Solutions CEO Bob MacDonald said: “We are looking forward to providing additional support to EDF Energy on a project, which is vital to the UK’s energy security and the transition to a lower carbon energy mix.

“This positions us as a key strategic partner at Hinkley Point C, maintaining our track record of playing a key role in every UK nuclear new build project since the inception of the industry.”

According to the contract, Wood will be offering full lifecycle services to the station developers EDF Energy.

Wood is already under a long-term agreement with EDF Energy Nuclear Generation to support the UK’s eight existing nuclear power stations.

In April, the company was contracted to provide a construction design management adviser service to the HPC power plant. It is already serving as sole suppliers for independent ultrasound inspections verification on safety critical components.

“This positions us as a key strategic partner at Hinkley Point C.”

Wood also provides safety case and engineering support, equipment qualification services in several key areas in support of the HPC project.

In December 2017, Wood secured a new contract to provide inspection qualification services to the Hinkley Point C project.

To be the first new nuclear power station built in 22 years, the 3,200MWe project is located in Somerset. It will feature two 1.6GW pressurised water reactors (PWR).
