Asia-Pacific power industry tenders activity in May 2020 saw 407 tenders announced, marking a drop of 30% over the last 12-month average of 581, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Asia-Pacific power industry tenders in May 2020: India leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, India led the activity in May 2020 with 279 tenders and a share of 68.6%, down 3% over the previous month and down 14% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Bangladesh with 40 tenders and a share of 9.8% and the Philippines with 36 tenders and a share of 8.8% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, India held the top spot with 326 tenders, followed by Bangladesh with 87 and the Philippines with 86 tenders.

Thermal is top technology area for tenders in May 2020

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, thermal accounted for the largest proportion with 39 tenders and a 44.3% share, followed by solar with 36 tenders and a 40.9% share and hydro with 13 tenders and a 14.8% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment in Asia-Pacific as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Project was the most popular segment in May 2020, with 212 tenders, followed by T&D Equipment (110) and Generation Equipment (40).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 181 tenders and a 44.5% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 122 tenders and a 30% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 97 tenders and a 23.8% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: six tenders and a 1.5% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: one tender and a 0.2% share.

Power tenders in May 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Malaysia): 1,000MW from one tender
  2. NTPC (India): 600MW from one tender
  3. West Bengal State Electricity Distribution (India): 200MW capacity from one tender.
