Oil and gas companies are making moves into the UK energy market.

Middle East and Africa power industry tenders activity in June 2019 saw 165 tenders announced, marking a rise of 40% over the last 12-month average of 118, according to GlobalData's power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry tenders in June 2019: South Africa leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, South Africa led the activity in June 2019 with 56 tenders and a share of 33.9%, up 0.1% over the previous month and up 51% when compared with the last 12 month-average.

In second place was Oman with 41 tenders and a share of 24.8% and in third place was Botswana with eight tenders and a share of 4.8% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, South Africa held the top spot with 37 tenders, followed by Oman with nine and Saudi Arabia with seven tenders.

Thermal is top technology area for tenders in June 2019

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, Thermal accounted for the largest proportion with 26 tenders and a 63.4% share, followed by Solar with seven tenders and a 17.1% share and Hydro with five tenders and a 12.2% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in June 2019, with 68 tenders, followed by T&D Project (56) and Generation Equipment (24).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection with 87 tenders and a 52.7% share
  2. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others with 42 tenders and a 25.5% share
  3. Project Implementation with 27 tenders and a 16.4% share.

Power tenders in June 2019: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (Kuwait) with 2,000MW from one tender
  2. Electricity Generation Company Malawi (Malawi) with 250MW from one tender
  3. Germany Trade & Invest (Germany) with 48MW capacity from one tender.
