Middle East and Africa power industry tenders activity in May 2020 saw 29 tenders announced, marking a drop of 75% over the last 12-month average of 114, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry tenders in May 2020: South Africa leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, South Africa led the activity in May 2020 with five tenders and a share of 17.2%, up 11.3% over the previous month and down 86% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Syria with four tenders and a share of 13.8% and Bahrain with two tenders and a share of 6.9% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, South Africa held the top spot with 36 tenders, followed by Oman with 20 and Iraq with seven tenders.

Solar is top technology area for tenders in May 2020

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 12 tenders and a 57.1% share, followed by thermal with five tenders and a 23.8% share and hydro with three tenders and a 14.3% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in May 2020, with 12 tenders, followed by Generation Equipment (7) and T&D Project (6).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: ten tenders and a 34.5% share
  2. Supply & Erection: nine tenders and a 31% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: six tenders and a 20.7% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: three tenders and a 10.3% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: one tender and a 3.4% share.

Power tenders in May 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Sasol (South Africa): 600MW from one tender
  2. Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission & Distribution (Zimbabwe): 500MW from one tender
  3. Public Establishment for Electricity Generation and Transmission (Syria): 67MW capacity from three tenders.
