Power industry tenders activity in Q3 2020 saw 2,559 tenders announced, marking a drop of 3% over the last four-quarter average of 2,641, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Power industry tenders in Q3 2020: Asia-Pacific leads global activity

On comparing tenders activity in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 1,181 tenders and a share of 46.2% during Q3 2020, followed by North America with 726 tenders and a 28.4% share and Europe with 327 tenders and a 12.8% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 238 tenders and a 9.3% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 87 tenders and a 3.4% share.

On the basis of the last four-quarter average, Asia-Pacific held a lead over others with 1,639 tenders, followed by North America with 445.

Thermal tops by technology in Q3 2020

Looking at tenders by the type of technology, thermal accounted for the largest proportion with 511 tenders and a 47.8% share, followed by solar with 423 tenders and a 39.6% share and hydro with 58 tenders and a 5.4% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in global power tenders activity during Q3 2020, with 936 tenders, followed by T&D Project (576) and Generation Equipment (521).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 1,220 tenders and a 47.7% share
  2. Project Implementation: 752 tenders and a 29.4% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 441 tenders and a 17.2% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 102 tenders and a 4% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: 20 tenders and a 0.8% share
  6. Electricity Supply: 19 tenders and a 0.7% share
  7. Others: five tenders and a 0.2% share.

Power tenders in Q3 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Bundesnetzagentur (Germany): 19,450MW from two tenders
  2. National Energy Regulator of South Africa (South Africa): 12,000MW from one tender
  3. NSW Coalition State Government: 8,000MW capacity from one tender.
