Browns Ferry 1 is a 1,256MW nuclear reactor which is located within the premises of Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant. It is located in Alabama, the US. The nuclear reactor is currently generating power and is in active status. The construction on the reactor commenced in May, 1967. The first power from the reactor was achieved in Oct, 1973. Subsequent to trial runs the reactor finally entered into commercial operation in Aug, 1974.

Description

Browns Ferry 1 is a Generation II nuclear reactor developed by GE Power, the main contractor for the project.

The 1,256MW reactor is owned and operated by Tennessee Valley Authority. The company has a stake of 100%.

The BWR reactor generates 10,757.3GWh/annum of electricity. It features 764 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released.

Development Status

The reactor construction commenced in May, 1967 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Aug, 1974.

Contractors Involved

GE Power was selected as the steam turbine supplier for the nuclear reactor. The company provided 1 steam turbine for the project. Tennessee Valley Authority was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by GE Power. The reactor vessel has been supplied by GE Power. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Carbon Steel (CS/SA 302 B/SA 36). The civil works were carried out by Tennessee Valley Authority.
