Southern California Edison (SCE) has entered into a power purchase agreement to buy 250MW of electricity from First Solar's new plant being constructed in Nevada, US.

First Solar is constructing the Silver State South solar project where it will ground mount its silicon-based panels on about 10km² of public land near Primm, Nevada.

The project will interconnect with SCE's proposed Eldorado-Ivanpah 220kv transmission line.

The plant is expected to begin producing electricity by 2014 and be fully operational by May 2017.

Upon completion, the plant will generate electricity sufficient to power 80,000 homes and the solar panels will be recycled after their useful lifespan.
