Dubai dissipates about 50% of its annually produced power through incorrect usage, according to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa).

The country’s average electricity usage per person is about 20,000 kWh per annum and 130 gallons of water daily.

Dewa executive vice-president customer services Abdulla Alhajri told Emirates 24/7 that power-saving appliances can help reduce wastage and the current consumption level can be reduced by almost 50%.

“It is very important to understand that by opting for cheaper construction materials you are actually spending more on power consumption,” Alhajri said.

The authority has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) to work together on environmental initiatives to conserve power along with water and enhance waste recycling.
