Alstom is to convert Kuwait's Az-zour gas-fired power plant into a combined cycle power plant for Al Ghanim International under a €170m ($239.5m) contract.

Under the contract, Alstom will build a steam-tail add-on power plant that includes adding steam power generation equipment to an existing gas power plant to increase its efficiency.

The steam-tail will add 400MW to the existing 800MW power plant capacity and will cut emissions per megawatt of power apart from increasing efficiency and cut emissions.

The project will be completed by 2014 and follows a 2007 contract with Al Ghanim to supply Az-zour with five GT13 E2 gas turbines and five TOPAIR generators.

Kuwait's electricity demand has been growing at an average of 8% a year and the country plans to add more capacity to its currently installed 12.6GW to meet summer energy needs.
