El Paso Electric plans to start construction on a 87MW natural gas-fuelled plant at Sunland Park in New Mexico, US.

The $83.9m plant will generate energy sufficient to power 45,000 to 50,000 homes and will serve the Holloman Air Force Base.

New Mexico's Environment Department and the Texas Public Utility Commission have already authorised the project and the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission has proposed to give the final approval.

Upon receiving all the approvals, construction of the plant is expected to start this year, reports Texas-New Mexico Newspapers.

The new plant will replace El Paso's Rio Grande Power Station.
