A new report by a US taskforce group has recommended the national government to undertake a tougher approach to ensure nuclear safety.

The report recommends tougher standards for back-up power supplies, back-up water supplies for pools holding plant waste, and improvements in reactors that are similar in design to Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant.

The group's advice may lead to an increase in the operation cost of about 104 reactors owned by companies such as Exelon, Entergy and PG&E.

A five-member Nuclear Regulatory Commission will now decide if the regulatory shift is warranted, reports Reuters.
