China's Huadian Shaanxi Energy, a subsidiary of China Huadian Corporation, has signed a joint venture agreement with the Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group to build a 4,000MW coal-fired power plant in Ankang, Shaanxi.

The plant is expected to meet all the power requirements in Shaanxi Province, while also supplying power to the highly populated city of Chongqing through the north-western power grid.

The construction of the 4,000MW station is expected to begin in 2009.

Huadian Shaanxi Energy entered into a framework agreement in August 2007 to construct the $2.2bn power plant. In January 2008, the company entered into a cooperation agreement with the municipal government of Chongqing and the government of Shaanxi province to begin construction.
